Costume, Hair and
Makeup Ideas
Mary-Anne
Mary-Anne
is the protagonist of the film and so, therefore, her costume, hair and makeup
need to reflect her character and personality very clearly to the audience.
Mary-Anne is a ‘plain Jane’. Although she is happy with her life she is
plodding along, taking it day by day. She is a stay at home wife who cooks and
cleans for her family and that is all she has ever wanted, to be a wife and
mum. She is truly content with her life; she is madly in love with her husband
and would do anything for her daughter. Mary-Anne does not make an enormous effort
with her appearance and is not image obsessed, but she still likes to look
nice. On a day-to-day basis she will do her hair nicely; she has long blonde
hair and she loves to style it. However, she wears minimal makeup, as she has
natural beauty. On a usual day, she will wear casual jeans and a t-shirt, as
she has no need to get dressed up. This casual ‘normal’ look will allow the
audience to relate to and warm to her and will also draw to their attention the
fact that extraordinarily scary things can happen to normal people – a scary
concept. When she goes to dinner with her husband, she will wear black, suggesting
that she plays it safe with fashion, like lots of other women in her position. Even
though Mary-Anne appears vulnerable and innocent at first glance, she is still
a strong independent woman, who manages to defeat Dennis, and is revealed as a
final girl of sorts by the end of the movie. Throughout the trailer, the
audience will see Mary-Anne in a light coloured t-shirt and
jeans and some type of flat shoe (i.e. uggs or converse). Her costume is femenine, due to
the colour of the t-shirt, reflecting her femeninity, however, the jeans give
her a masculine edge, representing the fact that she is the final girl – she is
strong. This is also conventional.
Dennis
Dennis
is the antagonist within our film. Dennis is a creepy middle-aged man who is
truly warped because of the abusive life he has lived in and out of care. He
has never had a family of his own and that is all he has ever wanted. He is so
envious of his half sister, Mary-Anne and he hates his mother for not allowing
him to be a part of the family. Dennis will always be seen in dark clothing
within the trailer; he wears a dark leather jacket, workman’s boots, a dark,
plain t-shirt and dark combats/jeans. The darkness He will have old, crumbling skin and tired
eyes. In the trailer however, the audience will never see his full face or
body, we will use extreme close ups of his eyes, mouth and hands, etc, as it
adds to the mystery of who he is. He has a bald head, as his hair has fallen
out because of the stress he has been through throughout his life. This could
also indicate a lack of warmth within his character and that the full extent of
the evil within his mind will be exposed within this film.
Lizzie
Lizzie
is Mary-Anne and John’s daughter. She will be a typical moody teenager who is
going through a hard stage in her life since she is fifteen. Although her mother and father love her
dearly she is having problems when it comes to her peers and boyfriend. Lizzie
has strawberry blonde hair, and wears a lot of dark make up, especially around
her eyes, to reflect her mood – she is an ‘emo’. She often wears dark skinny
jeans, white/black vests and dark coloured cardigans, and is often seen
listening to her music in her headphones . She feels very misunderstood, and
although she isn’t very openly affectionate towards her mother, deep down she
does really care about her.
John
John
is Mary-Anne’s treasured husband who has stuck by her through thick and thin.
However, when Dennis comes into the picture, he doesn’t believe Mary-Anne.
Instead, he and their daughter just think she is mourning the death of her
mother (Mary-Anne’s mother is revealed to have died at the start of the
narrative). Despite his love for Mary-Anne, work commitments lead to him
neglecting her; he stays working very hard to keep the business going and money
coming in and this puts their relationship on the rocks. This is why John will
always be seen looking smart in the trailer. He is quite a trendy man who takes
pride in his appearance, which is why he has a trendy haircut (shorter on the
sides, longer on top), although the audience will only see him in a plain,
light coloured shirt and trousers within the trailer. His stubble reflects his masculinity, and the fact that before she finds out she is being stalked, Mary-Anne sees him as her 'rock' - a pillar of strength within the family. He is the kind of man who
would wear polo shirts and smart trousers in his free time, and does have a
subtle bit of stubble. Although his style may make him appear, selfish and self-centred,
he does truly adore Mary-Anne, and would do anything to please her when it
comes down to it; he is a traditional man with traditional values at heart.
