Real-Life Inspiration for the Narrative

As a part of our research and planning we had to look into a real life crime which relates to our narrative. It became apparent to us that stalking is quite a common crime and many women are victims of being stalked by someone, even a relative. In the case we found the woman wasn’t stalked by a family member but the case has strong links with our narrative...

Police in Irondale, Alabama are searching for a man they say stalked a woman over a 10-day period and then abducted and sexually assaulted her Tuesday. Richard Earl Hayes, 45, has been charged with first-degree stalking. Police say he has been suspected to have taken part in the kidnapping and assault of the 42-year-old victim, but said those charges have not yet been filed. “For the past 10 days” Detective Michael Mangina said, “Hayes has followed and harassed the woman to the point of sending her text messages. He also called the victim, and called her boyfriend.  On Tuesday afternoon, Hayes followed the woman and forced her to pull over. That's when the sexual assault occurred,'' Mangina said. The assault is said to have occurred between 2 pm and 5 pm "we just have to determine where she was when it happened'' Mangina said. Police said the victim and Hayes don't know each other. “It's possible that there is a connection between Hayes and the victim's boyfriend, but that also remains under investigation. This isn't a random act. This lady was specifically targeted and we're trying to figure out why.”
We feel this case has a strong association with our narrative because the woman was specifically target and they don’t know why, just like in our narrative: Mary-Anne was specifically targeted but no one knows why until the end of the film when the twist is unleashed. Sexual assault is also suggested in our film/trailer as she is locked in a room with a mattress and beds have connotations of sexual activity. In our film the stalker also gets in contact with the person he’s stalking husband just like in this real life case study of stalking.

Another case study we found was a real life case of a brother stalking his sister because of the brother’s jealousy of her life...
James Keith Larry, 61, was accused of making at least 30 harassing telephone calls and threats to his sister. Investigators said the calls began in 2008 and continued through April 30, 2009. He was also accused of vandalizing his sister’s home with spray paint. Larry was arrested May 1, 2009. A Lauderdale County Circuit Court jury deliberated for about 20 minutes before reaching a verdict. Larry showed no emotion as the verdict was read. In his closing argument Wednesday, Lauderdale District Attorney Chris Connolly told jurors that threatening, profanity-laden voice mails Larry left on his sister’s telephone proved his guilt. Recordings of the voice mail messages were played during the trial. Defence attorney Martin Newell said in his closing argument it was a menacing family dispute; Larry believed his sister was preventing him from visiting his father. Connolly argued Larry’s threats caused the victim to live in fear. He played a recording of a voice mail message in which Larry told his sister to report it to police because “I can do time in jail standing on my head. It’s when I get out you are going to have to deal with me.”
We feel this real life case is remarkably alike our actual narrative, it is about a man who stalked his sister because he felt she prevented him from seeing his dad. Our narrative is about a man who stalks his sister because he is jealous of her happy life she lives and he believes she prevented him from having the life he desired.
